"There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness" - Edgar Allen Poe.
Anthropocene - found objects from a lost civilisation, is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by four times Archibald finalist Nick Stathopoulos at NG Art Gallery Chippendale. This show marks a new direction in his hyper-realistic painting. Anthropcene refers to a loosely defined chronological term where the impact of human activity on the environment can be detected in the geological strata.
Although there are elements of his previous toy obsessions and with pop culture in general, this new body of work transitions to a strange new world, where bizarre skeletal constructs float like clouds, ancient public works haunt desolate landscapes, surreal and inexplicable sculptures resemble primitive alien totems. These creations emerge from the artist's subconscious to challenge, confound, and delight.
