ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION

Photographer Sarah Rhodes and writer Alice McCormick spent three years visiting the homes and private studios of Australia's pre-eminent artists. They hunted echidna with Dorothy Napangardi in the desert outside Alice Springs and tasted home-pressed Tuscan olive oil at Jeffrey Smart's. The result of their journey is a surprising, sumptuous feast.

ARTIST STATEMENT

From the moment I fell in love with photography, I have poured over black and white photographs of artists. I thought if I examined these works for long enough, I would find my own way of seeing the world. An image that has always stayed with me is Henri Cartier-Bresson’s intimate photo of Matisse in his apartment near Nice. Matisse is pictured in his favourite chair, talking to his white doves and surrounded by their white cages. There’s something so personal and revealing about this image; and ever since I have wanted to capture poignant moments that show how creative people live and work
