OTHER WORLDS

“You arrive at things by chance – by coincidence, which takes the ego out of it (art), the ego dissolves and all you’re left with is your wits and you’ve got to run with them.”

Angus Wood, Artist, 2010.

In his latest exhibition Other Worlds, Sydney-based contemporary artist Angus Wood does a sterling job of making the ominous ‘unknown’ strangely seductive. Confronting us with evocative paintings that define the term ‘apocalyptic’, Wood’s work entices the eye with a rich palette and capricious subject matter.

Employing solo figures in desolate urban landscapes as ‘stands in’ for the entire human race, Other Worlds questions the position of the individual in today’s complex world. Rumour has it that Wood is a, “legend in the making”, whose work has been received with such enthusiasm – now one of our most exciting emerging artists. With influences ranging from Breugel, 18th century Romantic landscape painting, and Sci-Fi book covers, Wood’s work brings together abstract ideas with refined technical skill. Consequently, Other Worlds is a mixing pot of socio-political commentary and intrigue. Voicing a rather existentialist cry for a reconsideration of the relationship between the earth and those who inhabit it, Wood’s work subtly calls for pensive contemplation.

Wood reflects some inner angst about the maltreatment of our environment, and reminds us of powers beyond the everyday by delving deep into his psyche and speaking of places far away. Futuristic in nature and depicting a time and space far removed from the familiar, Wood’s landscapes are simultaneously mystical and real. We are transported to distant realms of the fantastic and invited to exist elsewhere. When we look at the work we are not entirely sure what we are looking for, which is perhaps what Wood intended. Founded on this philosophy of interpretive freedom we are all invited to contribute new meaning to each work.

After graduating from NAS in 2006 Wood’s efforts have been continually recognised. Being a two-time winner of the CGS Art Prize, winner of the Australian Galleries Printmaking Prize alongside the Fonas Printmaking Prize, as well as being a finalist in the Tim Olsen Drawing Prize it comes as no surprise that Wood’s latest exhibition Other Worlds is at once striking, showcasing the finest in cutting edge art. One may be left trying to decipher the codes Wood’s subconscious has arranged, but this is precisely what makes Other Worlds so compelling.
