MIA NG
Four years on since her last solo show Of a Place, Mia Ng returns to NG Art Gallery with a series of momentsin-time that stir an innate, inexplicable desire to travel coupled with an irresistible urge to just be and just absorb. Her latest offering Absence and Presence, to open on the 8th of November, was inspired by her recent trip to Tasmania in an attempt to make sense of this new world. From its beginnings as an investigation, a visual documentation of exploration around the island, Absence and Presence connotes ideas of transition; before and after, a state of flux and the conflicting natures of being. It is this literal and metaphorical "absence and presence" that resonates within each of the works, canvassing a dialogue that captures the true spirit of painting; one that transcends the intellectual and material existence to
embrace the sublime.

As a tribute to her late father's 18 month battle with cancer, Ng's journey through painting parallels the difficult, unknown journey one takes in facing mortality, be it one's own or humanity's. This exhibition reflects a maturating of Ng's relationship with paint and the very idea of landscape. It demonstrates a transition into a more abstracted, intuitive response to both the inspiration of travel and the meditative process of creation. Such abstraction evokes the need to look upon each snippet of this conversation-of-dualities once, twice, maybe even three times, before feeling fully satisfied: With your back turned it is impossible not to feel as if a change in the wind or a drop of the sun has occurred, revealing something new and previously undiscovered about the oscillating world of Ng's canvas.
