KITSCH AND CLICHE
Group Photographic Exhibition

To see work scroll to the right

Kitsch [kich] noun:
Art, objects or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garish or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way.

Cliché [klee-shey, kli-] noun
Anything that has become trite or commonplace through overuse.

When it comes to poor taste we cringe at the overused, groan at the tacky and roll our eyes at the commonplace. But, there is something amusing and endearing in these qualities, a reminder of times past and moments of familiarity. Kitsch and Cliché at NG Art Gallery is a celebration of this poor taste transformed with fresh eyes. Culture is reflected upon itself, standards of art are criticized in ironic twists and what was deemed ‘not art’ is celebrated and elevated to levels of recognized standards once more.

Acclaimed photographer Sandy Edwards curates the entirely photographic group show run from February 7th - 25th. Featuring Greg Weight appropriating Max Dupain’s celebrated Sunbather with a ken doll is beaming colour and Garry Trinh’s clouds captured in the shape of a saccharine smiley face. Other artists included are Richard Morecroft, Petrina Hicks and Polixeni Papapetrou all of whom take cringe-worthy clichés and dowse them in over sentimentality.

Consumerism, memory and the ironic are all dissected and pasted back together again in what has the potential to be criticized as lowering artistic standards. But, in the photos’ self-reflexive manner they knowingly smirk at the audience, and in this sly way create a new consciousness that transcends the trends that the photographs wittingly mock.

Perhaps with this new consciousness, we can freshly comprehend the exhibit’s images as saying more about experience and the differing depths of originality. After all there is something captivating in the trite!

NG Art Gallery and Mission Restaurant will host a Feast for the Senses dinner with editor of Artist Profile magazine, Owen Craven with presenter and artist Richard Morecroft in conversation with Director of the Australian Centre of Photography Kon Gouriotis and curator & photographic artist Sandy Edwards, on The Good, The Bad & The Pretty: Sins of Originality in Art on Tuesday 14th February (Valentine’s Night).
