Sydney based contemporary artist Jane Gillings, revisits her love of the found object in her upcoming exhibition at NG Art Gallery. Filling the gallery space with brightly coloured trash troops toting rocket and raygun alike, Gillings' latest offering "Where's my Jetpack?" is a nostalgic reclamation of her own childhood spent dreaming of living like The Jetsons and anticipating what this crazy techno-fuelled future we're now in, might hold. Clearly influenced by the futuristic aesthetic of the pop-tastic 50's and 60's, and the retro signage from sleazy Vegas Boulevards, Gillings' miniature models are humorous souvenirs from where we thought we'd be: in a world full of hover-cars and floating space stations.

Deeply personal, Gillings' work is a subtle reminder that despite all we've accomplished, there's still a long way to go. In addition, her intuitive use of the discarded detritus from our hectic modern lives highlights that while we were busy with our heads in the clouds, concocting a future to rival any Star Trek or Space Odyssey, never did we anticipate it would come laden with so much waste. In this playful return to a childhood spent battling her brothers in would-be robot PVC armour and a wash-basket helmet, Gillings' refreshing exhibition is confident that in a world where science fiction germinates science fact, a better, brighter, cleaner future is still to come.
